I became familiar with Rachel Timmins‘ work when I recently visited the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. Her work is still on display as part of the exhibit, out of the box: trends in contemporary jewelry. I fell in love with her whimsically, wearable pieces and to tell you the truth, I had never really given much thought to jewelry being made out of materials other than metals and stones. So it was refreshing to be introduced to Rachel’s unique perspective. The jewelry pieces that are on display at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art are from her MFA Thesis which expands beyond her wearables into illustrations and inflatable sculptures. The video on Rachel’s site that demonstrates her work in motion, only adds to the Seussical nature of it. If you’re in the Hampton Roads area, I highly recommend the out of the box exhibit. It’s up through April.
